Opening A
I knew at once that something was wrong. I went outside and saw many people. They were making noise. I became scared and went back inside.

What is missing?Specific setting, sensory detail, clear cause and varied sentences.
Opening B
I knew at once that something was wrong. The school compound, usually noisy at break time, had fallen completely silent. Near the open gate, our games teacher was waving everyone back towards the classrooms while a thin cloud of smoke drifted above the kitchen roof.
Why it is strongerIt creates a clear setting and gives precise clues.
Why readers continueIt raises questions without explaining everything immediately.
